Pankow remains steadfast in our proactive and collaborative approach during the COVID-19 public health crisis. Our highest priority is the health, safety, and well-being of our employees, clients, project partners and stakeholders, and the communities in which we work. We at Pankow share the concerns of those around the globe and here in California and are committed to following precautionary protocols from trusted sources such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local public authorities. The following list outlines measures we are implementing to do our part to help contain the outbreak while serving the best interests of our people, clients, and projects as we remain an essential service during this time

General Protocols

  • Pankow is actively complying with all city, county, and state-issued public health orders; projects that fall under the “essential services” criteria will remain active and are committed to following the protocols outlined herein.
  • To mitigate potential spread and cross-contamination across our offices and job sites, all Pankow employees will report to only one Pankow location (office or jobsite) through April 30th.
  • If a Pankow employee or someone they have come in contact with experience symptoms of illness congruent with COVID-19 as defined by the CDC, the employee must stay home and follow the CDC’s guidelines for monitoring symptoms.
  • Employees Should Use Social Distancing in All Interactions:
    • Practice social distancing in all interactions with others (CDC recommendation is a minimum of 6 ft.) to the best of your abilities.
    • Avoid typical greetings such as handshakes.
  • General Precautions for Offices and Job Sites:
    • Clean your hands often
      • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
      • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
      • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact
    • Stay home if you’re sick
    • Cover coughs and sneezes
      • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.
      • Throw used tissues in the trash.
      • Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
    • Face Masks
      • CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. Pankow is committed to following the public health orders put in place by local jurisdictions to slow the spread of this virus. We are following the CDC’s recommendation and approach to facial coverings as stated here.
    • Clean and disinfect
      • Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
      • If surfaces are dirty, clean them: Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
    • Office and Job Site Office Disinfecting
      Each Pankow regional office and job site office (to the extent that employees are present) are deep cleaned and disinfected according to CDC guidelines once per week. Please do your part to wipe down high-traffic areas and surfaces daily.

Pankow Offices and Job Sites Protocol

  • Pankow Offices – Pankow’s Oakland and Pasadena offices are closed. External parties and visitors are not allowed at any Pankow regional office locations.
  • Pankow Job Sites – For job sites that are considered essential services, Operational leadership will continue to monitor and communicate actions specific to each project site, and their respective client’s direction. VP of Operations and Directors of Operations will be holding team calls to discuss staffing plans and needs.
    • Job Site Protocol:
      • Access to Pankow job site offices must be limited to Pankow staff only; subcontractors and vendors shall meet outdoors as much as possible.
      • Safety orientations and morning huddles are held outdoors.
      • Each team will evaluate “essential meetings” that are typically held in-person such as OAC meetings, subcontractor meetings, Owner/Contractor meetings, etc. and develop a way to conduct these meetings remotely via WebEx.
      • At this time, job site walks with various on-site team members are still acceptable with the use of social distancing.
      • In situations where close contact may be unavoidable, try to limit the number of people involved in a given activity to allow for more space between individuals.

Business and Personal Travel

  • Business Travel – At this time, to reduce the amount of exposure risk, there shall be no business travel until further notice unless special exemptions have been made by the Executive Team. This includes regional travel (NorCal to SoCal) and any other travel for conferences or events.
  • Personal Travel – If you conduct personal travel in a Level 2 or Level 3 region as defined by the CDC, please follow CDC Guidelines and self-quarantine for 14 days upon your return; do not return to work. Day 1 should be considered your first day outside of the affected region. Please notify Brad Bitz, Director of People, upon return from your trip.
  • If you or anyone in your household have conducted any air travel to any region:
    • And develop symptoms of illness, please stay home and seek medical expertise until you are no longer presenting symptoms of illness.
    • Refrain from entering the jobsite office/office for 14 days upon your return. Please work remotely if you are able. While this is not a full self-quarantine, it is requiring that you not interact with office or jobsite staff members and practice social distancing if you are to need to enter a job site for normal duties.

If an employee or their family members are sick

Supply Chain

Pankow fully understands the impact that this public health crisis could have on the supply chain. To that end, job site leadership is actively tracking products and services provided to Pankow that may originate from impacted regions. Team members in Preconstruction and Operations are instructed to review their procurement plans and communicate with vendors and suppliers along the chain to discuss contingency plans if an impact is forecasted. Project team members are also reviewing their project owner agreements and tracking impacts due to this issue along with providing contractual notices to all parties. Our staff is working closely with our Regional Director of Operations on any impacts to staff, materials, or schedules; owner communications will also be addressed at that time.

Protocols for Suspected or Confirmed COVID-19 Diagnosis at Pankow Offices or Project Sites

Pankow is proactively monitoring employees reporting that themselves or a household member is exhibiting symptoms of illness congruent with COVID-19 in accordance with CDC guidelines stated here. If a confirmed diagnosis is made, the following steps outline our response approach:

  3. Operational leadership and project personnel will conduct a risk assessment using CDC guidance for potential exposure.

  1. Follow direct guidance from regional leadership and HR. Upon confirmation of diagnosis, regional leadership will produce a communication which will be used to inform Pankow employees, client, and trade partners of their possible exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace while maintaining confidentiality as required by privacy legislation.
  2. Operational leadership will follow local health authority/CDC guidance for reopening the job site once it is deemed safe.

2. Quarantine

Protocols

For confirmed cases (including non-Pankow team members and craft labor)

  1. Quarantine all individuals who have experienced close/one-to-one contact with infected individuals following CDC protocol.
  2. Confirm with an infected individual of close contact with other team members.

If non-Pankow personnel has come into contact with an infected individual, please work with their company to determine risk and notification using CDC Guidelines.

  1. For confirmed cases, Pankow will consult medical experts for advice and proper response actions.
  2. Offer voluntary remote work for individuals who are in a high-risk group.

Generally speaking, no other employees will be subject to quarantine, but management reserves the right to impose quarantines based on specific circumstances.
