Standard for Sustainable Learning
LAMC East Campus Complex, Sylmar, CA
Pankow completed this 103,000 SF Design-Build project for the Los Angeles Community College District, creating a modern academic hub with 16 classrooms, 11 laboratories, an auditorium, offices, and lounges. The project also introduced an outdoor amphitheater and a plaza that ties the new building into the existing campus.
Sustainability was central to the design: a 44,000 SF pervious paving parking lot with 408 spaces is covered by photovoltaic panels, contributing to the facility’s LEED® Platinum certification. The East Campus Complex has been widely recognized with awards, including the DBIA National Design-Build Award, Best Sustainable Project (San Fernando Valley Business Journal), and DBIA WPR’s Design Excellence and Project of the Year.
Advancing Education Through Sustainable Design
The East Campus Complex redefined Los Angeles Mission College’s academic environment by integrating sustainability, flexibility, and community. With extensive teaching labs, classrooms, and student lounges, the building was designed to elevate the learning experience while supporting the college’s long-term growth. The site development introduced a pervious paving parking lot shaded by solar panels, an amphitheater, and a new plaza that seamlessly connects old and new campus zones. Recognized with multiple awards, the project stands as both an academic resource and a model for sustainable higher education.
The East Campus Complex achieved LEED® Platinum certification and received multiple national and regional awards for sustainability and design excellence.
