A New Stage for Music and Community

San Francisco Conservatory of Music,
San Francisco, CA

Located across from Davies Symphony Hall, the 170,000 SF Conservatory serves as a vibrant campus and community destination. The 12-story plus basement building features 145 housing units, rehearsal and teaching spaces, performance venues, and a panoramic rooftop garden performance hall. A glass-enclosed street-level recital hall welcomes the public and activates the surrounding arts district.

The Conservatory was designed to support every aspect of student life—living, practicing, learning, performing, and socializing—within a single campus hub.

Where Music Meets Everyday Life

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is more than a building, it is a destination for collaboration between students, faculty, performers, and the community. Designed to serve as a complete environment for student life, the building integrates housing, dining, learning, and performance in one location. With its rooftop garden performance hall, café, rehearsal and recital spaces, and connection to San Francisco’s Civic Center arts district, the Conservatory embodies the union of creativity, education, and community engagement.

A Break in the Rhythm

The Conservatory’s exterior design expresses both rhythm and innovation. A sleek glass façade composed of alternating transparent and translucent panels creates a layered visual effect, while the sloped roof introduces a sculptural element that sets the building apart in San Francisco’s Civic Center District. Behind the refined appearance lies a highly complex curtain wall system, delivered through a Design-Assist process that required exceptional coordination among architects, engineers, and consultants. From angular corner conditions to concealed vents and sloped roof terminations, each detail was meticulously designed and executed. Materials sourced internationally were fabricated and assembled with rigorous quality control, resulting in a seamless exterior that marries technical precision with architectural beauty.

SFCM unites living, learning, and performance in a landmark building across from Davies Symphony Hall.
