Delivered with Precision
Cedars-Sinai Hillhurst Urgent Care and Clinic, Los Angeles, CA
Pankow completed this 59,000 SF ground-up clinic, including 11,000 SF of urgent care and outpatient services above 48,000 SF of subterranean parking. The clinic features 21 exam rooms, a procedure room, imaging, and support spaces, all designed to deliver patient care efficiently in a dense urban environment.
Located in Los Feliz/Silverlake, the project represented Cedars-Sinai’s first ground-up urgent care clinic in the neighborhood. Complex site logistics required creative solutions for excavation and shoring, including welded rakers on three sides and tie-backs along the city street frontage. Despite these challenges, the clinic was delivered successfully under OSHPD 3 standards, expanding Cedars-Sinai’s trusted care network.
Rooted in Community, Designed for Care
The Cedars-Sinai Hillhurst Urgent Care and Clinic expands healthcare access in the dense Los Feliz/Silverlake neighborhood while embracing the character of its surroundings. Located on a tight urban site with private property on three sides and active power lines overhead, the project required innovative planning and engineering to deliver a welcoming, efficient facility above a three-level subterranean parking structure.
Beyond meeting healthcare needs, the design was crafted to feel at home along Hillhurst Avenue. The building’s massing is broken into four volumes, clad with corrugated metal and custom concrete brick patterned with geometric motifs inspired by Los Feliz’s mid-century homes, vibrant shops, and cultural landmarks. A green-and-white plinth references Frank Lloyd Wright’s Samuel Navarro House, while the contemporary upper façade and ground-level ornamentation reflect the neighborhood’s eclectic spirit.
This hyper-local design approach reflects Cedars-Sinai’s broader vision: to meet patients where they live and to create facilities that are not only highly functional but also deeply connected to their communities. By blending medical innovation with neighborhood identity, the Hillhurst Clinic strengthens trust, accessibility, and wellness for Los Feliz residents and the Cedars-Sinai care teams who serve them.
Caring for the Care Team
Cedars-Sinai placed as much emphasis on staff wellness as patient care. A welcoming break room on the active street side of the building flows into a private outdoor patio painted with a mural by local artist Sarajo Friedman. Positioned on the second floor, the patio not only connects staff to the lively neighborhood below but also frames views of the Griffith Observatory. By situating these spaces in prominent locations, the design encourages collaboration, relaxation, and a sense of belonging for Cedars’ cross-disciplinary care teams.
