Perched on the north hillside of the campus with expansive Bay views, this 3,700 SF science center and 1,500 SF outdoor classroom embodies the school’s commitment to sustainability and experiential learning. The facility integrates two indoor laboratory classrooms, a covered outdoor classroom, office and storage space, and collaborative gathering areas. Distinctive features include a greenhouse, a mobile kitchen with a pizza oven/barbecue, and a fire circle for community use.

The project is designed for maximum natural lighting and ventilation, supported by solar power, rainwater harvesting, and plant-based cooling systems. Recognized for its achievements in sustainability, the Center has earned LEED Platinum certification, the ZNE School Leadership Award, and ENR California’s Award of Merit.

Beyond the Classroom

The Center for Environmental Studies at Bishop O’Dowd High School redefines the connection between education and the environment. Designed to function as a living laboratory, the facility provides versatile indoor and outdoor classrooms, spaces for experimentation, research, and group gatherings, as well as unique amenities like a greenhouse, mobile kitchen, pizza oven, and fire circle. By blending innovative sustainable systems with flexible learning spaces, the Center enriches the student experience and models environmental stewardship for future generations.
