Reinventing a Historic SOMA Landmark

The McClintock Building,
San Francisco, CA

Pankow partnered with SKS Partners, Pfau Long Architects, and Murphy Burr Curry Structural Engineers to re-envision the former Jessica McClintock headquarters in San Francisco’s SOMA district. The 110,000 SF project was stripped back to core and shell and rebuilt using a fast-track permitting and phased construction process, completed in under a year.

The building includes a new operable skylight at the common area (5,000–10,000 SF), modern MEPS infrastructure, and seismic rehabilitation. The project also addressed hazardous soil conditions and recycled 26 tons of materials.

Delivered on time and budget, the McClintock Building is now a LEED® Gold-certified, award-winning adaptive reuse project that strengthens both the building’s resilience and its role in the neighborhood’s ongoing evolution.

Balancing Speed, Safety, and Sustainability

The McClintock Building showcases how fast-track construction, sustainability, and structural upgrades can converge in a historic urban property. Working with SKS Partners and Pfau Long Architects, Pankow delivered a full core and shell transformation under an accelerated schedule, supported by phased permitting and delivery strategies.

Sustainability was embedded throughout the project—from recycling 26 tons of dress racks to mitigating hazardous soil and achieving LEED® Gold certification. A centerpiece of the renovation is the expansive operable skylight, sourced internationally and carefully coordinated across multiple vendors to ensure flawless installation. This dramatic feature floods the common areas with natural light, while the voluntary seismic upgrade ensures resilience and long-term safety. Recognized with a 2020 Architecture Citation Award, the McClintock Building reflects the best of adaptive reuse: preserving history while delivering a vibrant, future-ready workplace.

The McClintock Building achieved LEED® Gold certification and an Architecture Citation Award for its innovative reuse and seismic rehabilitation.
