Building Food Security for Alameda
Alameda Food Bank, Alameda, CA
Pankow partnered with srmERNST and the Alameda Food Bank to deliver a 19,000 SF expansion and modernization at Alameda Point. The project includes renovation of a 9,000 SF existing pre-engineered metal building and construction of a new 10,000 SF facility, supported by deep soil foundations and comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.
Executed through a Design-Build delivery model, the expansion integrates upgraded electrical, fire protection, sewer, and storm systems to support high-volume operations. Construction was carefully phased to allow continuous food distribution throughout the project. The result is a durable, efficient, and future-ready campus that strengthens Alameda’s food security network.
Designing for Equity and Resilience
The Alameda Food Bank expansion reflects how strategic real estate investment can directly strengthen community well-being. The project renovates an existing 9,000 SF pre-engineered metal building and constructs a new 10,000 SF facility, nearly doubling the organization’s operational footprint to better serve a city facing rising food insecurity.
The expanded campus improves food storage, processing, and distribution logistics, enabling faster turnaround times, increased capacity, and more efficient volunteer workflows. Deep soil foundations were tailored to the site’s unique conditions at Alameda Point, while a fully integrated Design-Build MEPS approach ensures long-term system performance, energy efficiency, and operational adaptability.
Infrastructure upgrades—including enhanced electrical, fire protection, sewer, and stormwater systems—create a resilient, future-ready facility capable of supporting growth for years to come. Careful sequencing and coordination allowed the Food Bank to remain operational throughout construction, minimizing disruption to essential community services.
The project reinforces the Alameda Food Bank’s role as a cornerstone resource for thousands of residents and demonstrates how infrastructure can be a powerful catalyst for equity and long-term community resilience.
The Alameda Food Bank expansion nearly doubled operational capacity while maintaining uninterrupted food distribution.
