Preserving History, Performing for the Future
Golden Bough Playhouse,
Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA
The Golden Bough Playhouse restoration revitalized a historic 1952 theatre into a modern, accessible, and energy-efficient venue that continues its century-long legacy of performance in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Pankow Builders’ scope included seismic reinforcement, structural and foundation upgrades, ADA compliance improvements, and complete renovations to the auditorium, lobby, and back-of-house spaces.
Key new features include hyperbolic stadium seating, a mezzanine-level bar and concessions area, enhanced acoustics, a new basement with rehearsal and circle theatre space, and advanced stage lighting and projection systems. Construction was performed in phases to maintain partial occupancy and ensure uninterrupted community use.
Sustainability measures, such as energy-efficient insulation, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and high-efficiency HVAC, reduced operational costs while achieving compliance with Title 24 energy standards. The result is a restored cultural landmark that honors its history and supports Carmel’s artistic future.
Revitalizing a Historic Stage
The Golden Bough Playhouse renovation represents a delicate balance between preservation, modernization, and cultural stewardship. First constructed in 1952 and rooted in a legacy that dates back to the original 1907 Carmel Arts and Crafts Clubhouse, the Playhouse has long stood as a symbol of the town’s artistic soul.
Pankow worked closely with Pacific Repertory Theatre and The Design Collaborative to restore the 5,000 SF venue while introducing 21st-century performance capabilities. The scope encompassed a full build-out of the auditorium, lobby, bar, and concessions, as well as rehearsal rooms and backstage facilities. Structural and seismic upgrades, including new foundations and steel framing, were paired with accessibility improvements that bring the theatre into full ADA compliance without compromising its architectural character.
The renovation also elevated the audience experience through the installation of hyperbolic stadium seating, improved sightlines, and a mezzanine addition that preserves the intimacy of the original theatre while enhancing capacity and comfort. Beneath the stage, a new basement level introduced expanded dressing rooms, rehearsal spaces, and an 80-seat “circle theatre” for intimate performances. A newly constructed state-of-the-art control room, lighting system, and scenic projection technology enable flexible and innovative stage design, positioning the Golden Bough as one of California’s most advanced small theatres.
Executed in phases to allow Pacific Repertory to remain partially operational, the project required extraordinary coordination with residential neighbors and local agencies in the heart of Carmel’s historic core. Through careful craftsmanship and community partnership, the Golden Bough Playhouse was reimagined for future generations—preserving its artistry, expanding its capacity, and renewing its role as a cultural cornerstone of the Monterey Peninsula.
