Pankow is a leader in the knowledge and application of sustainable practices in design and construction and is committed to being a good steward of the environment. Pankow is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, which is dedicated to the initiation, development and implementation of green building concepts, technologies and principles. Pankow professionals in all our regions are trained and accredited in LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Having LEED accredited professionals in executive management, project management and in the field offers clients an onboard consultant to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

Green construction relies on teaming and collaboration. Through our role as integrated team member of green construction and renovation projects, Pankow has a good grasp on what constitutes green construction best practices. These included knowledge of green products and methods, dynamics of green scheduling and associated costs of green.

By actively participating in charrettes and other design development forums, Pankow can rapidly respond to the needs of the project team. We’ve applied that knowledge to create an outline of those best practices for both office and jobsite as a useful tool for stakeholders involved on a green building project. Pankow’s Green Construction Best Practices checklist provides a detailed account of all actions a contractor can take to ensure a green project is successful, by supporting early decision making and helping them to anticipate potential pitfalls.

Design-Build and Green Building

Since the design and construction of green buildings adds complexity to the construction process, Pankow’s experience with integrated design-build delivery yields better results. Design-build brings the builder into the design process and breaks down the divisions between owner, architect and contractor to ensure that the intent of each LEED credit is met and adequate documentation is taken.

With the builder as part of the early planning and concept stages, the owner gets the benefit of real-time cost feedback associated with design and material choices being made. Design-build makes sustainable goals more achievable because it better equips the team to manage the addition of green components against the budget, mitigating costs – both to the bottom line and to sustainability.
