Home : About Pankow : Firm Profile

Starting in 1963, Charles Pankow founded his company on the strength of two primary beliefs:

  1. construction should be a collaborative process from start to finish, and
  2. superior construction value is achieved through innovation and continued improvement of construction processes.

More than 41 years later, Pankow continues to thrive as an employee-owned business that benefits our clients through construction innovation, engineering expertise and creative problem-solving. That helps explain why repeat business comprises the vast majority of Pankow projects.

Today our companies include Charles Pankow Builders, Ltd., for larger projects, Pankow Special Projects, LP, for smaller projects and renovations, and Mid-State Precast, a custom producer of structural and architectural precast concrete.

Charles Pankow Builders, Ltd. (CPBL)
CPBL is a construction company that concentrates on new construction and large renovation projects ranging in size from $10 million to $200 million. CPBL is an industry leader in creative approaches such as design-build and is a founding member of the Design-Build Institute of America. CPBL is acknowledged within the industry for its leadership, strict cost and quality controls, and pioneering construction materials and methods. The company is consistently ranked among the largest builders in the country.

Pankow Special Projects, LP (PSPL)
PSPL was organized in 1991 to more effectively focus Pankow expertise on projects under $10 million such as interior build-outs, building renovations, seismic upgrades, medical renovations and other specialized projects in existing buildings. Projects of short duration, jobs of limited scope, and jobs within occupied facilities are special situations requiring a different management and operational approach. PSPL operates as a hands-on builder, self-performing key parts of the work when needed and applying large-company sophistication and controls to small projects.

Mid-State Precast
Mid-State Precast was created by Pankow to furnish low-cost, high-value structural and architectural precast concrete components on projects managed by Pankow. Pankow's objective was to lower the construction costs and accelerate the schedules of precast concrete structures. Mid-State is the first plant to produce structural components for the revolutionary precast hybrid moment resistant frame (PHMRF), most recently used for the 39-story Paramount Building in San Francisco and the Westside Media Center in Los Angeles. Mid-State operates independently and produces components for numerous contractors in California.

Pankow Safety Principle

Safety Does Not Happen By Accident
Like project performance and client service, the well being of the Pankow team and the public is an essential core value that guides our actions.

Safety Does Not Happen By Accident is a principle that embodies Pankow's firm belief that all accidents are preventable and that any injury is unacceptable. It challenges the entire Pankow team - employees and subcontractors - to actively participate in the process and to develop innovative approaches to overcome the obstacles to achieving and maintaining an injury-free workplace.

To that end, Pankow is committed to:

  1. Providing the resources necessary to support a Zero-Accident Culture;
  2. Leading the industry in advancing workplace safety; and
  3. Never compromising the well being of our team and the public.
